Why Not Make it Clear?I was recently pouring over a lengthy client contract; my eyes were glazing over with boredom, and I was struggling to grasp the real meaning of the contract in human language, not lawyer talk. In the middle of this task I amused myself by thinking of the simplest way to say what this gigantic contract was trying to outline. "How would two children work out such a deal?" I wondered. I even fantasized about writing five points in colorful crayons on a small sheet of paper and mailing it to my client; but, I decided not to because I want my clients to think of me as competent and professional...not insane. But just for fun, here is what I came up with: 1. We'll do what we say we're gonna do, and we'll do it well. 2. We won't take stuff from each other. 3. We'll be nice to each other. 4. If I do something good or bad, you will tell me, if you do something good or bad I will tell you. 5. If Mother Nature gets in the way, we'll do it some other day. Simple eh? But then again, what would lawyers have to do? This issue covers the necessary elements for a professional proposal that doesn't require an attorney to translate. In this issue:
