Thank you for all the contest entries for the January contest, and there were many! There were some very creative variations on the meanings of the word puzzles. I'm happy to announce the following three winners who each won an activity to use within their organizations:

Kregg Kneipper (Colorado, U.S.A)
Rich Stevens (Auckland, New Zealand)
Barbro Eriksson (Malmö, Sweden)

Congratulations!

This Month's Contest

In this word puzzle, you are given a pair of words as a clue for a “Sandwich Word”.

The sandwich word comes after the first word and before the second word to form two different well-known compound words or phrases.

Here's an example:

TENNIS — ? — MAKER

What sandwich word appears after TENNIS and before MAKER to form compound words or phrases?

(The sandwich word is MATCH, as in tennis match and matchmaker.)

Here are a bunch of clues for sandwich words. After you have solved them all, read the first letters of the sandwich words. These letters spell out a pithy saying.

PAPER — ? — ACHE

SCRAMBLED — ? — PLANT

BROWN — ? — DADDY

GOOD — ? — NEWS

CLOCK — ? — ACTIVE

RED — ? — BLOT

OLIVE — ? — CHANGE

SHUT — ? — TIGHT

FRUIT — ? — DRESSING

HYDROCHLORIC — ? — RAIN

PEANUT — ? — FLY

POST — ? — HOURS

DOWN — ? — GROUND

ROUND — ? — TENNIS

GOOD — ? — COOKIE

LABOR — ? — STATION

MAIDEN — ? — TAG
